A fun and surprisingly easy project, I converted my Raspberry Pi 3 into a self-contained plug ‘n’ play RGB arcade stick! Just plug in the Megadrive compatible mini-DIN 9 cable and power and away you go. These plug ‘n’ play fight sticks have been getting popular but I wanted to do one designed for CRTs from the ground up. Here I’m sharing the HD Retrovision cable that normally goes with the CDX.
I already wanted to try out RGB-Pi; when I saw there were cheap ($50) USB arcade controllers built into a practically empty box the two ideas merged in my head. From RGB modding other consoles I already had some miniDIN sockets and these useful breakout PCBs. The RGB-Pi was extremely straightforward to wire up, and a few 3D prints tied things together for secure mounting.
This is a great little console to pick up and play when arcade controls feel better, especially fighters and shmups, plus I hope to try it out with some tate mode monitors.
